Foundation Swatch Compare: Maybelline SuperStay 24Hr vs Revlon PhotoReady

EDIT: (21 March 2011)
This review is not up to date. I am now loving the Maybelline Super Stay 24 Hour Makeup Liquid Foundation - it's my go to foundation. It has impressed me and has won way above the Revlon PhotoReady.

What's On My Nails: Brown Bag In The Buff

It sure has been some time since I play around with nail polishes again, I gave my nails some sort of a break from all the nail polishes I've been drowning them in. LOL!

So here's the latest in my nails "so-called-art" and these two colours, oh I've been loving so very much recently, and I thought, why not combine the two!? ^^

Beauty School 101: Sunscreens - Physical vs Chemical

Would you say that you are well-informed about sunscreens? In this day and age where everyone is slowly mutating to be so prone to cancers. Whereby carcinogenic is a term not alien to many of us anymore. Australia, being a very dry sunny country with majority of its land being deserts, continues to promote its advertising slogan "Slip, Slop, Slap"

"Slip on a shirt, slop on sunscreen, and slap on a hat"

So what's a sunscreen? What's in it that makes you feel protected from the harsh rays of the sun, when we do need just the right amount of Vitamin D?

I found an interesting article online while educating myself on this matter, and I thought I share with you what it's all about.

Haul Talk: iQQU Handcrafted Brushes

Hi again!!
This was meant to be a continuation of the previous post on ELF brushes, but since that turned out to be a gigantic photofull post, I decided to have it two parts.

Note: more brush-porn photos LOL!
Disclaimer: All products mentioned in this post are purchased with my own money, I have no affiliation or being sponsored whatsoever with the brand. My reviews are my own honest personal opinions.

So as mentioned I did purchase iQQU brushes from their website about few weeks back. I think it took them about 13 days in total to ship it and finally arrived at my house in Australia. It came from Thailand. Neatly wrapped and tied, I think the whole package had a homey, handcraft feel to it.

As the title state, this is a haul post, I have not tested out these brushes yet and have not actually washed them as yet. I will simply let you know what my opinions on them are based on first impressions.

Haul Talk: ELF Studio Brushes & Uses Tips

Hi everyone!!
How's everyone been doing?? Been hauling much?
It's still rather wintery here during morning and night, but nice springy weather during the day.

This post will be PHOTO HEAVY ~
I've made a video going through each brushes but here is better and clearer pictures of each of them.
If you want to watch the video CLICK HERE

Here I will go through my first biggest brush haul ever, and I'm really happy with them. All are soft, none are flimsy, none broke, I really like them. I purchased the 11 piece brush set from ELF Studio line and as iQQU was having a Summer Special, I had to get my hands on those artistic brushes. I'm a sucker for artistic stuff, or wooden/nature-inspired products. I'll do a separate review on the iQQU brushes though, I think that would be better, yeah? If not, this post will be just way too long...

By the way, all the products listed were purchased by me for personal purpose and to review for you guys!

Personally, I do think purchasing makeup itself need a balance of high and low end, and if you can find that middle ground - that's great. Not all expensive products are awesome and not all inexpensive products are awful. I do like purchasing from a range of ends, depending on the products.

Note that I don't own a single MAC brush as of this moment. I do find that they are way overpriced here in Australia. A 134 could cost you AU$105 if I can recall correctly, and a 187 would eat up a whole AU$85. So you can imagine how MAC brushes could leave you broke... oh so so broke.

So I'm always on the lookout for good, affordable brushes - even though at times I do splurge on 1 expensive brush, such as my Hourglass No. 2 brush - MY REVIEW HERE. Now that's another story...

So first up in my brush haul -

Ideas for YT videos

I'm just going to list some of the ideas I have in mind of what you can look forward to from my videos. I have some of these running through my mind for quite some time, and never got around to filming because of technical issues. =( But hopefully, slowly, I get to do them and my youtube videos will be more updated.

1) Lush Series
Here is where I will be talking about the kinds of products and which cleansers are normally for which skin type, or which toners will be for which, moisturisers and such.

2) Second Chances Series
Here is where I give some cosmetics products 2nd chance, and actually liked them better 2nd round than the first time I tried them. This actually lessen the numbers of products I regret buying, you know? Hahaha

3) Review Me Series
A bunch of reviews

4) What's that brand? Series
Go through a specific brand, some of their products and point out what's good and what to look out for.

and of course
5) Haul Series

6) Products I'm Using...

7) Products I'm Liking...

8) Products I regret buying...
For those products that can't be saved. lol!

9) Painting Nails Series (I'm still wondering how I would do this... )

That's what I've got so far.. Let me know what you think..

It's a little bit of this and that...

Just me rambling for tonight...
Let's roll...

1) Need to get new mascara, running low and dry. Priceline is having a BOGO sale on Max Factor (All Eye products), so maybe this is my chance to finally try Max Factor mascaras? We'll see...

2) Impressed with Graftobian HD Creme Foundation, I shall check out the full size pots at IMATS, and shall get my mum a pot as well =)

3) Thinking of which or what powder would be best for my mum's mature skin? She wants the glow I get from my skin when I get slightly oily. MAC Mineralized Skinfinish Natural?? Or one of those HD powders?

4) My L'Occitane Olive Facial Lotion is running low, maybe I'll just use my Lancome Hydra Zen for now... but I kind of liking that L'Occitane Olive range... hmmmmmm

5) L'Occitane Olive Facial Foam is also low... =( I was using this range everyday, day and night, for like 5 weeks straight back in Indonesia.

6) Bummer to my skin reacting to the weather change. I spot several pimples and redness and dry patches - I didn't see them while I was in Indonesia...

7) My Lush Herbalism Cleanser is empty too =(

8) My eye makeup removers Neutrogena and Missha - both are on their last drops

9) Still loving MAC nail lacquer in In the Buff. Doesn't calling it nail 'lacquer' make it sound yummier? LOL

10) I have a love/hate relationship with NARS Multiple Stick in Orgasm. Some days I just want to give it up, some days I adore it.
11) There's a brand I found in Indonesia, and it's actually owned by Mandom Japan. "PIXY" and I'm currently using their Cleansing Water as face makeup remover/pre-cleanser. Just pour some on to cotton pad and wipe your face with it. Non irritant or cause any redness or itchiness, removes pretty nicely.

12) I finally watched "Dear John" & "The Last Song" (both are based on Nicholas Sparks' novels) and I must say I think The Last Song had a better storyline than Dear John. I cried in The Last Song... =="
in the end though, The Notebook and A Walk to Remember are still the best (imo).

13) People say the Urban Decay 24/7 Eye Pencils are the best and does not smudge on them at all. But I think it still smudges on me...?? It just happens to like to smudge on the corners of my eyes. Does anybody know why this always happens?

14) I should really do some readings, instead...

15) I'm hungry... and it's 10.40pm here in Brisbane... a cold winter night...

16) Wow, I can see through the frosty glass that I've used at least 1/3 of the Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer. Actually, it looks more than 1/3 but not yet 1/2.

17) I think that Garnier CleanSensitive 2 in 1 Waterproof Make-up Remover smells of rose and lilies.

18) You can now tweet longer with ^^

19) So tempted to try Laneige skincare - it's a Korean brand with Song Hye Kyo as one of the faces.

20) I utterly am not happy with Australian phone companies. Indonesia, being a 3rd world country, has much better internet and phone services. Sorry.

Makeup and Glow Little Haul

The other day, I accidentally stumbled upon a website that's based in Australia (more specifically, in Brisbane -YAY! 'cause I live in Brisbane at the moment), an online makeup store called Makeup and Glow. They will also be at this year's IMATS in Sydney!!

Now I'm not sure if all of you have heard these brands, but I'm sure some of you would have at least heard of it or even tried it. I know there are quite a number of youtube beauty gurus out there that love these brands. What I mean are these:
  • Ben Nye
  • Graftobian
  • OCC Lip Tars
  • Temptu
  • Japonesque
  • Yaby
They do sell lots of other brands as well, those above are just to name a few.

I was like, "YAYYYY!!!!" and went ahead and purchased some items from them. I got:
  • Graftobian Hi-Def Warm #1 Foundation Palette
  • Indelible Creme Eye Shadow in: Plumkin (purple), Manhunt (charcoal), Intergalactic (Silver)
Ok, one reason why I wanted to try out these creme eye shadows were because they're 70% off. LOOK HERE!
So you see why I was curious and got myself some. Originally I wanted the Immortal (Lilac Pewter) and Ever After (Metallic Purple) but they both were out of stock, so I got what's in stock. And even though the jar looks rather tiny compared to MAC Paint Pot, the quality and for that price, I am impressed. You'll see what I mean soon, in the photos.

This is what the palette looks like with the case on...
This is what's on the back... labelling each shade.
Here's what the colours look like...
And somehow, my darkest shade, which is called Enchantress (very far right) looks like this...
I did contact Makeup and Glow and asked about it, they said it's normal for creme foundations to have the pigments pop up on the top? Hmm, ok. I haven't really had much experiences with creme and hence so intrigued by Graftobian.

A quick swatch of the foundation from darkest to lightest in the Warm #1 Palette

with flash
from left: Enchantress, Temptress, Vixen, Ingenue, Graceful Swan

without flash (natural light)
Which one do you think is my shade?? ^^

Quick Review (since I haven't worn them on my face yet!)

  • very creamy
  • very pigmented, super pigmented
  • works as concealer as well so it's like foundation/concealer on the go
  • when you first swipe the foundation, you can feel the layer of moisture
  • you can mix and match the foundation according to your current skin shade
  • travel friendly
  • great for makeup artist who wants to carry several foundation shades at a time
  • clear lid to allow you to see the shades
Price: AUD29.00

And here's what the 3 creme eye shadow look like (alongside their boxes)
On the front, it looks like this
Description on the box
And, next to MAC Paint Pot, it does look small... but I'm sure it'll last me awhile, anyway.
I think the colors are true to what they look like in the jar, but with different lights and different angles, they seem to change slightly. As you can see in the following two photos. (both with flash)
here, you see that the colour of the silver looks very silver.
and here without flash
Then I thought, I'd go in the shower with it on. Lots of foam went all over it, warm water poured onto it and everything. The result? I'm amazed... Look!
I rubbed across it pretty hard too! It didn't smear or smudge or budge!
So, here's my little review on it:
  • waterproof
  • won't budge or smear or smudge or move
  • long lasting
  • would work both as cream eyeshadow and cream/gel eyeliner
  • texture is quite creamy and easy to work with
  • glides on effortlessly
  • once you let it set, it really does not move
Price: currently 70% off, so it's down to AU$5.95 each

Alright, that'd be all. Have you heard or tried Graftobian? What's your current favourite foundation? I'm yet to find my HG, a long and winding journey that is ... teeheehee

Much loves,

It's still winter in Brisbane...

Hi everyone!

It's cold cold cold here in Brisbane tonight and my fingers are struggling to type. It has been quite some time since I last blog, but here I am...

First thing first, I have to mention roseannetangrs MEGA Lush Giveaway~

And I don't know if you noticed... but I had to reread and reread it to make sure, and yes whoa... I got mentioned! Thank you Roseanne!!

It's an awesome, awesome, giveaway with tons of Lush favourite products worth of winning!! Go check out her youtube channel if you haven't and subscribe~ She also has a Facebook page CLICK HERE

So back to my ramblings...

I noticed that when I applied my Hourglass Veil Fluid Foundation in Indonesia and Singapore, I could achieve the effortless, 'my skin but better' look in no time, and I would be happy to walk out the door with or without checking my face in front of mirror first. Somehow, however, I cannot do that here in Brisbane, Australia, the land of 4 seasons. Strange, if you ask me, for this is a US cosmetics brand. What have I done wrong? Or what could I do to improve my technique of foundation application? I find that it doesn't seem to melt into my skin as effortlessly, and there seems to be separations or worse, creeping into the fine lines and ball up to become dry patches. Oh My Goodness...Maybe it's not as bad as it sounds... hahaha

And to show you what I mean, here's a little shot (photos aren't of the best quality, but I think it still shows you a bit of what I mean...?) the following photos were taken back in Indonesia. Wearing Shade No. 2. Taken outdoor, in natural light.

And here was a shot about a day ago, outdoor. Taken with my iphone though, so I guess it isn't the best quality either... however!! I can see a slight difference in the colour of my face and my chest. My face seems to be slightly tanner? I wonder if the sunlight in Indonesia and Singapore... and the sunlight in Brisbane/Australia... plays a part in how this foundation looks on me? It's a thought... that boggles my mind.

Anywhooosss... I went to the MAC counter at David Jones today and asked whether they have testers for MAC Face and Body Foundation, because I am very interested in it at the moment after hearing reviews from lollipop26 (youtube), and other reviews online... and guess what. It's not available... to us in Brisbane!! Only at MAC Pro Stores in Sydney and Melbourne. How sad!! =( So I think I'll wait till IMATS in Sydney next month :D

Oh by the way, to all living in Australia... I saw that Revlon is having a sale on all, I repeat, ALL their foundations at the moment. All their foundations are now down to AU$29.95. You can spot them at Priceline, Terry White Pharmacy, and even David Jones at that same price. So with my 10% staff discount at David Jones, I gave in and purchased... *drumrolllll*

Hahaha... I so gave in.... sue me! These are normally, originally AU$36.95. So it's like $10 Off for me. Me likey sales.
Luckily I read tons of reviews and checking out face chart before purchasing this, if not I would not have really be well informed about the fact that their shade numbering is way off. 004 Nude is slightly too light, while 005 looks like I've got a tan, while 006 actually looks way much darker than 008 Golden Beige... and 008 and 005 look very similar, with 008 is a tad lighter. So I purchased 008 Golden Beige. My very very first Revlon foundation. I'm a Revlon foundation virginity is g...g..gone. Teeheehee...

Here's a little swatch on my underarm (note: flash photo)

You can definitely see a tinge of darker undertone as shown here on my underarm, but I think it should blend on my face, I'm going to try it tomorrow and hopefully, fingers crossed, hopefully, just maybe, maybe, it would be just the right colour and I'll be a happy girl :)

Oh and I think my underarm veins are looking green? At first I thought I'm seeing both blue and green, but I'm not sure, I could be wrong, but I still think I'm more NC than NW.

Now I'll just post a little snippets of what I've been up to this weekend.

I had...

I went to...
Here's what Brisbane River and City looks like from one side...
And what I had for lunch today...
I shared with a friend! I could not have possibly finished it all by myself...

Alright alllll.... I've got school (aka university or "uni" as I'd mostly call it) tomorrow, so I best be off...... before I don't stop.

Talk to you soon. Real soon. As soon as possible. It's soon. ^-^ Mwaahhh!

August 1, 2010

It all started...

Back in the year 2009, on the month November, a little game started... It's called "A Piece of Me..." Game hosted by the kind Shirley the Toothfairy from the Netherlands. She's the first to start, I was second to play it. And here we are, in the year 2010, on the month of August... well tomorrow is August, so I thought I might as well do one now, just in case I can't make it tomorrow...

This game is to share a piece of you every month.

So this month...

I like: holidays, especially going overseas, or going back to where I used to live. aannddd I still like makeup... teeheehee... but I really think a lot more before impulse buying them now, because I need to start trying to use up what I have first hahaha... not that I have a lot, I just like to experiment...

I don't like: dehydrated, flaky, acne skin!! most of us would know what that felt/feels like... aand I don't like mosquitoes! Found them in Australia, found them in Singapore, found them in Indonesia... everywhere =(

I want you to know: that I'm going back to Brisbane this Tuesday morning... early morning from Surabaya, then stop over at Brunei during the day then off to the long flight back and will arrive in Brisbane at night.

I've planned: to keep in touch with my old friends here in Surabaya (my primary school friends)

I want to say to someone special: my sisters - I love ya, I miss ya... and my doggie Rama back in Brisbane, I miss you too, boy!!

There are two ways of spreading light; to be the candle or the mirror that reflects it. ~Edith Wharton
